The Jewish Culture Trail ? The Synagogue
(um)

Publicidade
The Jewish Culture Trail ? the synagogue A synagogue is a place of meetings, prayers and teaching. Some pieces of information, written between 1790 ? 1792 tell us about two extant synagogues in Zarki, and about the third one that was build in 1870. The third synagogue, built in a unique Roman-Moresque style, was the most magnificent. The temple was rebuilt in 1954 - 1957 after it had been damaged by Nazis, at present, it is the Community Club. The small classicistic synagogue, the ritual bath (mykwa) and the educational building (cheder) were completely destroyed during the World War II. The present building is 1/3 longer than the old synagogue, but it still has the original arrangement: the main hall with a small addition in the eastern wall, which was the place for Torah (aron ha-kodesz), bima in the middle and a balcony in the west (a gathering place for women). As the religion says men and women prayed separately, men on the grand floor and women in the gallery . Nobody prays there now and nobody lights the Sabbath candles at present.
