Occurrenceof involuntary urine loss: exploratory study between puerperae in aphilantropic maternity of a city in São Paulo State - BrazilUrinary incontinence is a symptom that reaches predominantly women andconsists in a public health problem. Puerperium is a fragile phase ofall pregnancy and puerperium period that receives scarcely attentionfrom health professionals and the there is a lack of nationalliterature about the prevalence of urinary incontinence. In this way,this study aimed to study the Occurrence of involuntary urinary loss ina puerperae group and specifically to identify the occurrence and typeof symptoms related to involuntary urinary loss at any life moment andduring pregnancy and puerperium period; to describe the occurrence ofinvoluntary urinary loss at pregnancy and puerperium period, accordingto: number of pregnancy, type of childbirth, use of forceps,episiotomy, weight and newborn?s cefalic perimeter. This iscross-section descriptive study developed in a philantropic maternityin a city from São Paulo State - Brazil. Participated on this study 244puerperae, with age between 14-43 years, that appeared in puerperium?sconsultation. To collection data a half-structuralized interview andmaternity?s handbook was used. The results point a prevalence of 45,9%involuntary urinary loss, when considered its occurrence to the littleone time, at any moment of life. Between these 112 women, 77,8% hadinitiated symptoms during index pregnancy; 9,8% after index childbirth;6,3% before index pregnancy; 3,6% during another pregnancy and 2,7%after another childbirth. At any moment of life and at the currentpregnancy and puerperium period had predominance of stress symptoms,following by mixed and urgency symptoms. The existence of symptomsfound in the immediate puerperium suggests the need of specialattention by the health?s system and the professionals, in order toprevent negative repercussions in woman?s health.
