Knowledge and attitudes regarding the field of Physical Therapy amongthe health professionals working in the Brazilian Family Health Programin Ribeirão Preto (SP), Brazil.The Brazilian Family Health Program (PSF) was created in 1994 and itsmain objective is to provide primary health care acting as gateway forthe health system. The modern profession of physical therapy (PT)developed in the twentieth century, it is one of the newest professionin the health area. Today, the access of the population to the PTassistance in Brazil is limited, and the knowledge of its performanceseems to be restricted. This cross sectional study aimed to analyze theknowledge and attitudes regarding the field of pt among the healthprofessionals working in the PSF in Ribeirão Preto (SP). The resultsshowed that most health professionals were white women, above of 40years old, who had at least twelve years or more of education. Most ofthem were classified as B in economic status, had three or more yearsof work in the PSF and four or less years in the health services. About91.7% reported that the inclusion of others professionals in the PSF isneeded and 48.6% specified that the professional to be included shouldbe the physiotherapist. The level of general knowledge of thephysiotherapist?s performance revealed to be good or medium, with themean of 16.2 points in a score of 25 points corresponding to 64.8% ofthe test. Knowledge was found associated with the variables education,time of study, professional occupation, time of work in the healtharea, economic classification, and work place. The attitude scaleshowed that most of health professionals have positive attitudes(99.1%) regarding the PT profession. The finding of high knowledge onPT field suggests that the health professionals of PSF can properlyidentify case for possible PT intervention.
