Publicidade
Arthur Miller, an outstanding playwright of American drama, had a pragmatic out towards the major issues of life dogging the American mind. In his plays, he makes a deep probe into social, economical and psychological tensions of life, hence his plays are relevant not only in America but elsewhere also. ?Death of a Salesman? is a tragedy depicting step by step deterioration of Willy Loman, the protagonist of the play. Willy is an aging old man living in a world of Illusion. He considers himself as a dynamic person and the most liked salesman of his Company. He has high expectations of his two sons, particularly the elder son Biff. He is Also confident of Bill, his younger son, making a mark in any profession. But his sons turn out to be good for nothing fellows. Willy becomes disillusioned and his mind starts falling apart. The play is a domestic drama totally holding family as a focal point. Most of the action takes place at Willy?s home. Linda ? Willy?s wife plays a significant role. She understands the failures and frustrations of her husband and makes heroic efforts to nurse Willy back to hope and cheerfulness. What is touching is that Willy himself is aware of His pathetic condition and tries to be optimistic. But in the end, he becomes victim of his own illusions and commits suicide. Critics say, that the situation faced by Willy Loman is something very typical of the American economy today. In spite of all its industrial and technological progress, American Capitalism has very little security and happiness to offer to the common man. The play is a fine blend of pathos and satire.------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------------------------------Abstractby: J Prabha.
