One True Thing
(Anna Quindlen)

Publicidade
This an almost real-life story of a family. A successful career girl who gave it up to care for her terminally ill mother. It was dumped on her by her father. She assumed the housekeeping role of her mother and also became a companion and nurse to her mother until her death. She learned a lot about the mother she did not really know before. She was more like her father and her two brothers are close to her mother. In time she would discover her father?s infidelities and she treated him with scorn until her mother told her she knew about it and decided it is best to tolerate it without breaking up the family. The two brothers could not relate to their father and were closer to their mother. When her time came she held her hand . At the funeral they were told that the autopsy showed she was ingested with an overdose of morphine. She was accused of doing it and jailed but bailed out by a lady mentor. She remembered her father spooning food into her mouth just before she died. She thought her father did it out of mercy and she protected him by not telling the lawyer and the prosecutor about it. She was eventually acquitted but some people still believed she did it out of love for her mother. The press even accused her of trying to flee after the death. This story was circulated by the father of her former boyfriend who has betrayed things she has told him before. Even her estranged father told her he understood what she had done. Now she realised her father did not do it but it was really her mother who cunningly misled them that she was too weak to do things for herself.
