Disney?s Magic Spanish, Spanish Picture Dictionary, is a great way for very young children to get their first exposure to the Spanish language. While clearly not as effective as being exposed to Spanish speakers, the dictionary is fun and accessible. This abstractor uses it with his eight year old on a daily basis and finds her using the words unsolicited during her day to day activities.Being targeted at children, The book does not rely on a conventional alphabetical listing of Spanish words, although there is one in the back of the book. Instead the book is divided into listings such as, ?The Face? or ?Tell Me When.? Each page then is filled with thematic images and words. It is not until the very end of the book that a brief grammar is given and also a list of linking and descriptive words. There are also pages dedicated to colors, numbers and other useful topics.While the book focuses mostly on word recognition, there are also many short sentences and exclamations for the children to learn. It is very contemporary using words such as ?videogame? and ?sunglasses.?The book is large and hard bound making it easy for young fingers and the font sizes and images are both large enough and appropriate for young children. If the child is old enough to pick out the words in English, they can, with an adults help, also learn the word in Spanish. The art is from across Disney and shows hundreds of characters in trademark roles; villains doing villainous things, lazy characters being lazy. Usually, a child can tell the Spanish word simply by looking at the picture.Once you get over the non-alphabetical format, Disney?s Magic Spanish, Spanish Picture Dictionary is a wonderful way to introduce non-speakers to the Spanish language.
