Genesis
(The Bible)
The book of Genesis is the first book of the Bible. It contains so many stories that are familiar to even non-believers. For instance, the creation story of Adam and Eve and the ever popular story of Noah's ark are both contained in the book of Genesis. Then there are some less familiar stories. One of my personal favorites is the story of Jacob and Rachel. Jacob who is the father of Joseph, also a familiar biblical figure, begins his life in constant conflict with his twin brother but, fortunately for him and not for Esau, God favors him and he overcomes. He is given the things important to life in those times, both his brother's birthright, and his father's blessing. In love though, well, let's just say poor Jacob. Although he finds the bride of his dreams, he is required to work a number of years in order to wed her. He becomes her father's slave for a number of years and then, in the dark of his wedding tent, is given her older sister instead. Not realizing his bad luck, he sleeps with the sister, and then because he is an honorable man, is bound to her. He still loves and wants Rachel, so he stays and slaves for her father for another number of years in order to wed her. He finally does get to wed her but again (poor Jacob) after she bears him two sons, the favored Joseph and Benjamin, she dies.It is a sad and tragic love story but yet I think Rachel must have been a rare beauty and/or Jacob must have really loved her to endure the way he did to be with her...simply wonderful!
There are many pages that detail the life of Joseph. He is central to the chronicles of the Jews because it is through him that the Jews arrive in Egypt, a place where they eventually become slaves to the Pharoh and that sets the stage for another famous story that everyone knows, the story of Moses, but that is another story, and another book.
