WAGNER, JOHN & CHIN, JOYCE - XENA WARRIOR PRINCESS ? SLAVE 1999 Dark Horse Comics. Graphic novel adventure that could easily have made a good episode of the series itself. Gabrielle & Xena arrive in a harbour town, where they quickly discover that the main trade is buying, selling, importing and exporting slaves. Most of the slaves are criminals who are being punished through sale into slavery. Xena has no pity for them whatsoever, but one slave seems to be an innocent young lady who doesn?t look as if she belongs there. Xena decides to rescue her. However, the girl has no desire to be rescued. Xena decides to bid for her personally in order to buy her and give her back her freedom. Xena is however outbid by a mysterious Egyptian man who enters the auction at the last minute. Xena starts a rescue attempt and finds out that the Egyptian is a resurrected zombie, but the slave girl is kidnapped and taken by Sea towards Egypt. Xena now knows that the slave girl is heavily pregnant, as Xena is herself (the TV series was at this time written around Lucy (Xena) Lawless?s pregnancy, and the comic book adventure echoes that. The girl?s foster-father had sold her into slavery to protect her from assassins, hoping to buy her freedom he, but the plot has failed. The girl is an illegitimate daughter of Ptolemy, (in effect half-sister to Cleopatra), and therefore assassins want her dead. Xena & Gabrielle sail to Egypt and enlist the help of a reluctant Cleopatra. She has abandoned the Egyptian Gods in favour of the Roman and Greek ones favoured by Mark Anthony. The slave girl?s owners hope to sacrifice the girl to use her royal blood to resurrect the vanished Egyptian gods. Xena?s rescue bid fails, but there is a shock, when the gods come back before the sacrifice is even made, and deal with the villains themselves. They have their own reasons for not being in Egypt, and have no wish to serve a mortal?s agenda. They dispatch the villains and leave again. Allis now resolved. Xena & Gabrielle travel off to their next adventure.
