Emma Woodhouse is at a loose end when her governess Anne Taylor movesaway. She is endowed withwealth, good looks, prestige andis well aware of how clever sheis. She decides that her endowments are put to better use at a job. So she tries herhand at quite a strange professioncalled Matchmaking. Her first client is Harriet Smith, a girl ofquestionable origins. She triespushing her from one questionable match to another and her attempts obviously lead to disastrous schemes. Emma is the story of a self-styled protagonist's gradual realizationof her lack of self-knowledge. Of course, in Emma's new job as Matchmaker, there is a very amusing and realisticdepiction of how one's simple motivation to act selflessly can backfire terribly. Three couples work through their self-inflicted issues. Harriet and Mr. Martin are meant to be, from the very beginning, for each other. Then we have Emma and Mr. Knightley who are in denial of their mutual feelings of love. And lastly we have Mr. Churchill, who is put through the motions of being an eligible partner for Emma first, and then for Harriet as well, and actually secretly engaged to Miss Fairfax. The three couples in loveis almost like the depiction ofthe three stages of love ? confusion, denial and assurance or rather acceptance. The humor and characterization of the story keepsone on the ballsof their feet andmakes for avery interesting read. Of course, the predictable ending of how everything works out for the best is an antithesis of how everything realistically doesn?t fall so well into place. That slightly dents the pleasure of a well written novel. Yet, theheartbreak, romance and detailed, subtle character portraiture is widely considered one of Austen's finest work, more so because itpresents the lives of a small community realistically and excitingly.
