Genesis
(The Bible)

Publicidade
The Hebrew word "bereshith" meaning "in the beginning" is also the Hebrew title for the book of Genesis. The word Genesis itself comes from the Greek "Geneseos" which could mean "birth? or the "history of the origins". Therefore Genesis means things about the beginning of creation and the history of humankind. It also tells us how God created man in His image. The book of Genesis also tells us about the genealogy of Gods creation Adam and Eve. It is widely believed that Moses was the author of the book of Genesis which serves as a preamble to the Mosaic laws. The probable dates when this book could have been written along with the other five books of Moses wherein the Laws of God are written and known as the Pentateuch have been worked out to be between 1446-1406 B.C and is considered to be one of the most ancient books in the world. It should however be noted that without this book the world would have been in darkness about the origins of human history and mankind would have had no idea from where they came. The first chapter of Genesis summarizes the creation of the heavens and the earth. It essentially gives us the brief summary of the first six days of creation. The second chapter details the creation of humankind?s first man and woman Adam and Eve. This chapter begins with the last day of the week being ordained by God primarily for rest which actually is the conclusion of the previous chapter and the conclusion of creation itself. The next chapter deals with the Fall of Man through the serpent which made them go against the edict of God and their subsequent banishment from the Garden of Eden. Chapter 4 deals with the descendants of Adam and the progress of sin. Chapter 5 gives the genealogy of Adam. The purpose of this chapter was to record the order of the families with the names of the first ten patriarchs upto the flood through whom the promised Messiah was to come. Chapter 6 gives the extent to which sin had progressed and the beginning of the judgment of God through the great flood. It also tells us about the patriarch Noah who was a righteous man and who found favor in Gods sight and through whom God kept his promise and saved him and his family from the great flood. Chapter 6 through to Chapter 8 deals with the beginning and ending of the flood. Chapter 9 goes on to tell us about Gods fresh edict given to the family of Noah and his descendants. This chapter also tells about the covenant established between God and Noah and God's promise that he would never again destroy mankind through floods. As a sign of that covenant God set up the first rainbow in the sky to remind mankind forever about this covenant that He made with Noah. Chapter 10 deals with the history of the sons of Noah and the list of the tribes that came up from them. Chapter 11 deals with the spread of the nations and mans greed which culminated in the great confusion of tongues at the tower of Babylon. This also shows the division of one human race into many tribes or nations each with its own peculiar language. This chapter also gives the genealogy of Shem. Chapter 12 deals with the patriarchal history of Abraham right from his birth, his background, his land, his people right up to his last days in chapter 25. The latter part of Chapter 25 deals with the descendants of Ishmael and Isaac and the birth of Jacob. The latter part of Chapter 25 through to Chapter 35 deals with the tumultuous life of Jacob and of his life at home and abroad and his home coming again. Chapter 36 deals with the descendents of Esau. Chapter 27 through 41 deals with the life of Joseph and his career. While Chapter 42 to 47 deals with Jacob?s migration, chapter 48 through to the beginning of Chapter 50 deals with the last days of Jacob while the latter part of Chapter 50 deals with the last days of Joseph.
