Will Storr Vs. The Supernatural

Will Storr vs The SupernaturalAuthor: Will StorrAbstract: Canberra Times ReviewWill Storr set out as just another cynical journalist ready to write a magazine article debunking the claims of an American central heating engineer who runs a service exorcising demons. What he saw and heard on this assignment sent him off on a ghost hunt across the United States, Britain and continental Europe. He retains doubts about the existence of the spirit world, but admits his previously total disbelief has taken a jolt. He dismisses an ?investigative? English television show where the script demands that ghostly apparitions and ?happenings? are scheduled to fit neatly between the commercial breaks, while meeting people who seem quite genuine about their supernatural experiences. He spends nights with ghost-seekers and mediums, witnesses unexplained lights in dark corners and is involved in a conversation, by means of instruments called dowsing rods, with a bad-tempered ghost from the 15th century. He is at a loss to understand why video and audio recordings pick up mutterings which the cognoscenti casually describe as electronic voice phenomena. Storr balances the arguments by interviewing the Catholic Church?s chief exorcist, and a philosopher who rejects the whole concept of an afterlife by asking sarcastically whether souls hung around some celestial lobby in prehistoric times waiting for humans to evolve to the point when they were ready to be inhabited. After a series of experiences that range from the horrifying to the hilarious, Storr postulates his own theory of an afterlife where the souls of the departed are doomed for ever to share rooms or buildings with their living inhabitants, occasionally scaring the wits out of more susceptible visitors or being forced to talk to earnest ghost seekers, but mostly being totally ignored. Purgatory indeed.
