RichardBach's first book following Jonathan Livingston Seagull is a mystical adventure story abouttwo barnstorming pilots who meet in a field in midwest America because each isdoing what he really wants to do. If that sounds like the point where Jonathan left off, it could be true: for Illusionsreflects what has been going on in the author's head since the phenomenalsuccess that changed his life.Thecurrent of the river swept silently over them all young and old, rich and poor, good and evil, the current going its own way, knowing only its own crystal self. The othercreatures laughed and said, 'Fool! Let go, and that current you worship will throw youtumbled and smashed by the current across the rocks, and you will die quicker than boredom! But the one heeded them not, and takinga breath did let go,and at once was tumbled and smashed by the current across the rocks .Yet in time, as the creaturerefused to cling again, the current lifted him free from the bottom, and he wasbruised and hurt no more. Thereason for this, as Shimoda explains to Richard, is that the book will open tothe page on which the reader may find guidance or the answers to doubts andquestions in his mind.Donald Shimodais one of the fictional characters in Illusions. He is a messiah who leaves his jobof being a messiah (and also of being a mechanic at a garage) after decidingthat people value the showbiz-like performance of miracles and want to beentertained by those miracles more than understanding the message behind them. Hemeets "Richard", a fellow barn-storming pilot and beginsto pass on his knowledge to him, even teaching Richard to perform miracles ofhis own.Thenovel features quotes from "Handbook Of A Messiah", owned by Shimoda, which Richard later takes as his own. The most unusual aspect of this handbookis that it has no page numbers. The reason for this, as Shimoda explains toRichard, is that the book will open to the page on which the reader may findguidance or the answers to doubts and questions in his mind.
