The girls live with their mother in a house and wait for their father who is a yankee soldier.The Marchs' house is poor, but filled with love and open for friends.The girls'age varies fromtwelve (Amy) to sixteen (Meg). Each of them has the different character and interests - Meg is a romantic young lady looking forward to love and marriage, active and spontaneousJo takes her first steps as a writer, Beth is a shy andsensitive girl who expresses herself in music, and Amy, who is charmful and independent, is on her way to become an artist. The book tells us about their joys and sorrows, successes and failures.The actionbegins when Jo takes all her courage and a basket fullof kittens and goes to the house next door to meet a boy named Teddywho lives there. This gives a beginning to a series of events, whichdeeply affect the girls' lives.This is a bookabout growing up andfinding one's own place in the world. Growing up can be stressful and painful, but girls accept its inevitability, all of them but Beth, who refuses to grow up and there is no future before her. Although the book is a bit old-fashioned, it can still be a nice read for young girls andbring its freshness into their lives.
