Horse Fever: A Guide For Horse Lovers And Riders
(Johnson, Pat)

Publicidade
This is a ?book of the horse,? directed specifically toward young people about to get their first horse. It is (even more so) meant for those who wish to participate in gymkhanas and the other horse and rider type of shows. It also details care of the horse and the outfitting, behaviors, courtesies, and care of the rider, both alone and with respect to other riders.

At the beginning of the book is a picture (from a photograph) of a horse with a listing of terms pertaining to its anatomy. From poll to fetlock, muzzle to croup, it teaches the terms (visually) that one needs to know to ?talk horse.? The author covers in some detail the choosing of a breed or type of horse, with some of the characteristics a hunter or jumper, for instance, needs, and the best breeds and types of horse for the beginner in this and various other fields. She covers feeding, care (daily and otherwise), grooming, stabling, exercising, first aid (and when it is needed, until the vet comes), and many emotional considerations of and for the horse. She recommends, for instance, that one physically take care of one?s own horse ? otherwise, the will bond with and be friends to the groom, rather than to the rider. She covers in some detail the tack (types of bridles, bits, saddles, etc.) one needs for various kinds of riding. She also covers the kinds of clothing needed or desirable for various types of shows and competitions. The author talks about various types and situations in riding, from free hunts to jumping competitions, Western riding to quiet Eastern trail rides, from quarter-mile races to the Olympics equestrian events.

The final chapter shows the great National Horse Show in Madison Square Garden each November. The book is chattily written, aimed primarily at teen or even preteen readers looking to own their first horse. Its emphasis is heavily on Eastern styles of riding, conditions and circumstances, although there is mention of Western range conditions and horses needs, as well as the types of horses suitable for Western and desert areas. There is plenty of meat to the story, however, even for older horse lovers. It is well and freely illustrated, and has a wealth of information, very well-presented.
