Dumas swashes every buckle in this novel, which is actually (albeit loosely) based on historical fact. D?Artagnan comes from Gascony with just one dream ? to be a Musketeer. His impetuous nature soon finds him within the thick of the action, blundering across one of Cardinal Richelieu?s plots, and notching up three duels with members of the Kings Musketeers, Athos, Aramis and Porthos, who will soon become his greatest friends. D?Artagnan and his three companions must protect the Queen from the Cardinal?s plots to discredit her, battling with two of his most dangerous spies, one of whom is the beautiful but deadly ?Milady.? Central to the Cardinal?s plans, she steals a set of diamond tags, the Queen?s gift to her lover the Duke of Buckingham, and the four friends must race against time to return them before the Queen is exposed. The Queen is saved, but Athos realises that their fair foe is none other than his wife, who he believed dead, and was guilty of many heinous crimes. During the siege of La Rochelle, d?Artagnan is finally made a Musketeer, but his life is now in danger from Milady who detests the way her plans have been thwarted. The four Musketeers deliver Milady into the hands of her brother who intends to send her to Botany Bay. However, she tricks her gaoler, Felton into freeing her and murdering the Duke of Buckingham who Milady has described as the embodiment of evil and the cause of all her trials. She returns to France to take revenge on her enemies, but after poisoning d?Artagnan?s lover she is captured by the four Musketeers and executed by another man who has suffered from her plots. Despite everything, the Cardinal accords D?Artagnan a grudging respect and rewards him with a lieutenant?s commission in the Musketeers.
