The Zahir
(Paulo Coelho)

Publicidade
Paulo Coelho?s ?The Zahir? is a semi-autobiographical creation of the author best known for his seminal work ?The Alchemist. It is by no means his best creation or even his best effort but he once again tries to cast valuable light on the mysteries of life and living. But what is more important that that is his interpretation of love and its pivotal role in our lives. The protagonist of the novel is a writer himself who is happy with his life. He became a writer because of his wife, who is war journalist. Then, she suddenly disappears. And the writer, thinking that she left him because she was dissatisfied, tries to live his life on, but fails miserably. Gradually he starts feeling the presence of his wife everywhere around him. This is when he decides to find her out. And in search of her, he rediscovers his own self and the mysteries of life. The only way to find true happiness and true love, he finally finds out, lies in living the life without the self-imposed boundaries of the rules embedded deep in our subconscious. When these rules start governing our lives, and when we become salves to these rules, is when life starts getting progressively miserable. Spiritual truths can only be embraced by an open mind, for which one needs to free oneself from the shackles of past programming. The book has its problems but is quite readable for those looking for spiritual answers to worldly miseries. However, do not expect too much from it.
