La Nuit De L'oracle
(Benjamin Barrier)

Publicidade
La Nuit de l'oracle combines both a plot and a reflection on the concept of writing. Pens and pencils, ink and rubbers, pads, files and notebooks, all the writers' tools are carefully prepared. Besides the narrator has just recovered from a very serious illness that could have cost him his life, and he comes back to both writing and life. He's about to write down a new story on his blue notebook. New stationery, a new life free of diseases, a new novel... it's a fresh start for the narrator, a fresh start that could be considered as a resurrection. The emphasis is put both on his bond to life and on the dangerous, even devilish power of writing. This blue notebook the narrator uses to lay down the lines of his novel turns into a trap that closes on his own character. When he stops writing, the author abandons his character shut down in a basement room, in complete darkness, with no chance of getting out. Writing is not only a threat to the characters, but also to the writer, as the link between fiction and reality can be very sensitive. Writing can conjure up the future, without the author's knowing. When the fictitious event becomes reality, the novelist gets the impression that fiction can bring bad luck, like this French writer who, as the narrator describes in La Nuit de l'oracle, will lose his child a few years after having described a child's death in his book. The guilt will prevent him from ever writing another line. The connections, the relations set up by writing between the past, the present and the future, the writer's coming and going between the world he describes and the world he lives in are very disturbing, very strange. Sometimes the author wonders: "where am I?" "Is that real life??. A book is an energy generated by others; it is made out of existing books and lays down the path for future ones. As far as this book is concerned, we can read in it a story about a mysterious manuscript entitled "La Nuit de l'oracle", a story within the story, a mise en abyme in which the main character turns out to be writing itself. A novel trying to solve the enigma of novels, but that fails.
