Pride And Prejudice
(Jane Austen)

Publicidade
Pride and Prejudice is the story of five sisters set in rural England of the eighteenth Century, where making a good marriage, was imperative for women who had no means of self-dependence, socially or financially. In this case the Bennet sisters have an ambitious mother and a well meaning if indifferent father. Mrs Bennet's ambitions centre mainly around her beautiful eldest daughter Jane, who she hopes will make a match of it with the easy-going, wealthy, if not too intelligent, Bingley. Her plans, however, are seen through by Bingley's friend, the equally wealthy if the more acutely intelligent, Darcy.

Jane's sister, Elizabeth is the real heroine, her sparkling intelligence is displayed in the fence-and parry dialogues with Darcy. These two strike sparks at their first meeting but soon Elizabeth turns him down, citing his lack of empathy and arrogance towards people lower down the social scale. Jane Austen is a little harsh towards a relatively minor character, Elizabeth's friend, Charlotte, who decide to marry the uncouth curate to ensure, if nothing else, security, for herself.

In the end, a much chastened Darcy helps to reconcile Jane and his friend Bingley, helps to rescue Lydia,(another of Jane and Elizabeth's sisters) from the seductive wiles of the Army officer, Wickham and finally, manages to win the heart of his elusive Elizabeth.

The truth contained in this novel that a good marriage is imperative to obtain social respectability, is a universal one, finding echoes even now, especially in the social mores of the Indian subcontinent.
