It is a common belief that a child?s development depends on his/her surroundings. Frances Hodgson Burnett proves the same in the story ?Secret garden?.
Mary was a little girl born in India during the reign of the British. Her dad was busy with his work, her mom with the kitty parties. There was no one to care for her, but her maidservant. Then the whole country was hit with plague killing everyone except Mistress Mary. She belonged to no one.
Her dad?s brother then brought her to his Manor at Misselwaithe. Mistress Mary was quite contrary. She was always rude & indifferent to others. But the kind maid Martha, her brother Dickon, the gardener Ben Weatherstaff brought about a change in her. From being the bossy & ugly girl, she was transformed to a sweet, kind & beautiful angel.
The authoress has done a good deal of describing the Misselwaithe Moor. The way she has explained the moor, instantly bring a picture of the moor in to your mind. And the Yorkshire accent used a number of times in the book is so brilliant, that you crave to read more of this accent. The best part of the book is undoubtedly the Secret garden itself. The way the transformation of the garden from a lifeless piece of land to a place as beautiful as the Paradise above is described, is so charming & enigmatic that one can?t help but wish that one was a part of it.
The book is a must have for everyone, from an avid reader, to someone who rarely reads. It really boosts your imagination. In the modern world where everyone is preoccupied between himself and herself, reading this book is a great way to rejuvenate oneself. Kudos to Frances for such a marvelous book.
