A Dictionary Of Canon Law

The book is a dictionary of the Code of Canon Law, which is the functioning legal system of Catholic Church, and which affects virtually every aspect of the faith-life of over one billion Catholic Christians throughout the world. The book contains nearly about 2000 canonical terms explained. I have not come across a dictionary of canon Law in English so far. The book, as the author writes in his forward approaches the subject from present day, and a historical perspective and usage. The book also cites many of the Vatican II Council documents. The book also contains 7 appendices which include, specimen model decree, canonical appointments, legal maxims, regulae juris etc.
One can find hard work the author has put into the work by going into the history of the terms, and the application of the law in the present day Church. However, there are certain terms contained in the book are not found in the Code of Canon Law. They are from other sources such the 1917 Code of canon law, and other ecclesiastical legal documents. Author also claims that the book contains Oriental Code of Canon Law (CCEO). However, the use of the CCEO is sparse, and could have done better service if he has done and in-depth study of CCEO, as in the case of ?Code of Canon Law?, which is of the Latin wing of the Catholic Church.
The official text of the Code of Canon Law still remains in Latin. The terms that the author defines and explains are based on the translations of the Latin text. Author?s lack of command over Latin language is also telling on the book. However, the author is to be praised for this pioneering work. It would be a help to all the Catholics to understand the law that governs them.
