Just Another Day

Just Another Day............. George Leffingwell was a poor, but
hard working man who lived with his wife Mary.Mary was like a true
friend and she stood by her husband through the hardest moments of
their life. They lived in a small rented home in a lonely village and
George worked in a factory in the city and earned a paltry sum of money
just enough to earn their bread and butter. They cared little about
money and didn't mind spending a portion of their hard earned money on
the hungry and very poor people living in the city. Their lifestyle was very simple..........
Everyday Mary would get up early in the morning, prepare food and George
would leave early in the morning to work in the factory in
mussoorie.Mary would be left alone at home, having only the lovely trees
, the view of the beautiful mountains and valleys far away touching the
sky as her only company. George would return home late at night
after having worked like a dog all Day long. The only time they spent
together was during Sundays. They really knew very little about each
other. The only gift George could afford to give Mary were a
bouquet of flowers or a bottle of cheap perfume. But this time Christmas
was again round the corner and George wanted to make this Christmas a
special one.He wanted to buy Mary an attractive green emerald that
would match well with the old silver ring which she couldn?t wear as it
had no gems on them. And so it would look very old and kind of ?naked?.
He knew that Mary loved gemstones and he immediately went to his old
friend James who was a businessman dealing with jewelery in the city.He
really thought that his friend could help him choose the gemstone for
Mary.George also knew that he would have to shell out a lot of money.
He then remembered an old watch which his mother had given him long
ago.But it was of no use to him as it didn?t even have a strap and was
odd and old fashioned to have an old watch without even a leather
strap. And so he decided to sell his watch and use the money to buy Mary
the gift that is the emerald that would look great on her silver
ring.He was sure that Mary would love it.The business man and friend
assured George that he could sell his old watch and would be enough to
buy Mary the emerald. After many days went by , the day before
Christmas arrived and George had already told Mary that he had a very
special gift to give her this Christmas. To his surprise Mary said that
she too had bought a very special gift for him. At the end of it
all ,Christmas finally arrived and George came home from the factory as
usual after a hard day in the evening. He was finally ready to give Mary
her gift.He immediately presented Mary with the gift wrapped in a
velvet box with a nice cute red ribbon tied to it.She looked at it as
though it was some kind of a magic wand. And she quickly opened the
velvet box and saw the sparkling emerald.George said with a smile on
his face ?Here is your gift?.Her face quickly turned pink and looked as
though she was blushing, and then said ?Oh George you shouldn?t have,
the emerald is very nice but it is of no use now?.George with a
surprised look on his face asked ?What do you mean, didn?t you like the
gift??.She then said ?I had sold my silver ring so that I buy you the
leather strap with that money and you could finally wear that wrist
watch that your mother gave you?.
