Interpretor Of Maladies
(Jhumpa Lahiri)

Publicidade
Recently I read a book 'Interpretor of Maladies' by Jhumpa Lahiri. In this book the author has, through her short stories, given an insight into the lives of the non-resident Indians in Britian and America settled in the early 1960's and 70's.In the same book she has tried to potray the lives of the people staying in 'Old Calcutta'.
Being a Bengali (Born in Bengal or parents of the same origin) herself probably she has described the social and eating habits of the Bengalis alongwith their emotional upheavels quite starkly and with great detail.
The author has told the stories of the simple people like BooriMaa(Old woman) who sweeps the staircase in an Old building and Bibi Haldar (a girl with plenty of ailments and who still yearns for marriage) in such an engrossing way that these characters remain forever etched in your memory. She has in the same finesse etched the characters of Mrs.Sen and Mala wherein they try to deal with their inadequacies to fit in the foreign locale. She has also tried to potray the lives and emotional upheavels of the second generation of Non-resident Indians who have been Born and brought up in their adopted countries and their out of sync lives with their Indian counterparts. She has succeeded in bringing alive the nostalgia of old Calcutta .
In this book each story is told with finesse, but the author would have done more if she would have added stories about the other parts of India settled abroad too instead of restricting herself to Bengalis alone.Neverthless the stories are enticing enough to take the readers to the end of each one.
