When a famous scientist of the CERN who studied the antimatter is found brutally assassinated, the symbology professor Robert Langdon is called to identify the strange symbol in the chest of the scientist. His conclusion is overwhelming: the mark is a symbol of an old brotherhood of scientists called Iluminati, an enemy of the Catholic Church, which had supposedly been extinct for centuries.What is even worse is that the antimatter container has disappeared. This container is now a time bomb because without its energy supply it it will lose its capacity to hold the antimatter and in time it will free the destructive power of the antimatter. In Rome, the College of the Cardinals is congregated to choose a new Pope, when it is announced that the four favourite cardinals have been kidnapped, at the same time that the Swiss Guard receives images of a box with the word CERN written on it and that supposedly it is somewhere in the Vatican. Robert Langdon and the daughter of the assassinated scientist (Victoria Vetra) are desperately looking for a way to save the lives of the cardinals and to find the antimatter by following the ancient clues left by Illuminati. Although they are doing their utmost the cardinals are eliminated one by one, respectively through water, land, air and fire, as the symbols in their chests indicate. However Victoria is abducted and Robert will have to find the old hiding place of the Illuminati to save her. In the end it is the Camerlengo, the right arm of the old Pope, who finds the antimatter and saves the Vatican. After this the Camerlengo is to be elected the new Pope but it is found out that he himself has been behind all of these crimes, not the Illuminati, and he ends up committing suicide.
