Aesop's Fables
(Jerry Pinkney)

Publicidade
Aesop's Fables is a classic in historical literature. Questionable origin of these fabled tales is ascribed to Aesop a greek slave born around the 6th century B.C. Tradition has it that he won his freedom as a result of his wit and learning and lived somewhere around the sixth decade mark in his life.

As might be expected these short, concise tales with moralistic messeges were orally handed down for a few centuries before being consigned to the hard copy versions of what we have today. The total number of fables has been estimated at well over two hundred, but a compilation of over sixty with illustrations is a true treasure find.

I selected Jery Pinkney's book both for its number of fables, over sixty, and the colorful illustrations in pencil, colored pencil and watercolor. The reader will recognize the familiar tales of Belling the Cat, The Sick Lion, The Ant and the Grasshopper and The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse. The rest you'll have to discover on your own and meet again for the first time the cherished short stories you were introduced to in your youth.

Used traditionally as a children's collection of stories, Aesop's Fables should be viewed as a read with your children experience. The moralistic concepts, while not bad ideas especially in todays society, should be interpreted for children by an adult. It has often struck this reviewer that a new, up to date version, set around the concept of Aesop's Fables should be written by some children's author not afraid to tackle moralistic concepts that would give children in today's society a new perspective to old time tested values for living life.

This book is published by SeaStar Books, New York. It should be easily purchased at any book store chain or easily ordered once you have committed yourself to the task at hand. This would make a great holiday gift for a child, or the child in all of us.
