(Stephanie Harvey)
Stephanie Harvey. Nonfiction Matters: Reading, Writing, and Research in Grades 3-8. Stenhouse Publisher, 1998. The premise of this book is an important one in teaching elementary and middle grades. Many teachers focus on fiction works to the exclusion of including nonfiction in the curriculum. Harvey?s premise is that using nonfiction works in teaching are important because they improve student?s critical thinking and analytical skills. With the passage of No Child Left Behind, the integration of Language Arts and Social Science is suggested in teaching both subject areas. The activities and lessons in this book present a valuable integrated curriculum for any teacher at the grade levels listed in the title. The types of activities in this book assist students in research, Writing non-fiction, isolation a topic, developing a thesis statement or main idea in their own writing, looking at other resources to determine the main idea, organizing a non-fiction paper, summarizing information, the ability to solve problems, and questioning the conclusions of others. These are important abilities for students of any age, but are critical to practice in the third through the eighth grades. The other important lesson that students will learn through using activities in this book is the students? ability in distinguishing a rough draft from a final draft of their own work. The book is divided into developing quality inquiry-based questions, evaluating the resources, and the actual writing of the paper. Even the appendixes have important teaching material, including note taking hints and sample contracts for each grade level. Parent forms are also included in this text. The bibliography provides a listing of quality texts including picture books for lower elementary grades and chapter books for the upper elementary grades. A separate section of the bibliography is devoted to evaluating notebooks, speeches and letters. In the age of reduced finances, the section on using newspapers as a resource in classes will be extremely important curriculum builder. Harvey is a former reading and writing teacher, who has taught at the elementary level and in special education classes. She now works as a private developer for Public Education and Business Coalition.
