Nineteen Eighty-four

In 1984 Orwell takes the style and approach of storytelling in taking us with our hero on journey through the book. The main character in the book gets depicted as an average man, stuck in an extraordinary position where he is constantly being watched by a very dark interpretation of the well known big brother. Initially Orwell succeeds in creating a strange reality ? something that can only come from another?s imagination, but as the book moves on we realise disturbing similarities between the world that Orwell creates and modern society.
1984 shares vague traces with Animal Farm but only in as much as government and political power is concerned. In 1984, Orwell takes in-depth look at the world, power structures, beliefs, values and even language and how they are an integrated system which supports each other in supporting our world. In modern society we can argue that Orwell merely took the evils and oppression (be it intellectual or physical) and concentrated it in one book, but given the time in which Orwell wrote we can only agree that he had great foresight and applied it to create a brilliant piece of social and political speculation.
Like many other writers, Orwell is no stranger to applying human emotion in the ever popular romantic flavor. In many other instances, writers could have been accused to use love, and more specifically romantic love, to sell their story. Orwell on the other hand uses is in a brilliant and even necessary way by combining it with all the values and norms set by this imaginary world. At times it is hard to imagine how one man can on the one hand create a world so cold and cruel while on the other, tell a story so tender and sweet. One is led to believe that Orwell does indeed know what he is talking about in both his criticism of the world and his praise of human love.
