In order to defeat the resurgance of an ancient evil, a wizard, Gandalf, must unite the peoples of Middle Earth. With the guidence of Elrond, the wisest of the Elf-Lords, a Fellowship is created. The Fellowship of the Ring is composed of Halflings (or Hobbits) including Frodo Baggins (who's uncle Bilbo Baggins found the One Ring and whose quest it now becomes to destroy it), Meriadoc Brandybuck, Peregrin Took and Samwise Gamgee. Also in the Fellowship are the Elf Legolas of the Woodland Realm, Gimli son of the Dwarf Lord Gloin, and Aragorn, who is the Heir of the ancient realm of Gondor. Boromir, son of the Steward of Gondor, is the final and most reluctant member - believing that to destroy the Ring will be Middle Earth's greatest tragedy.
Throughout their journey, the Fellowship is followed by a Halfling-sized being called Gollum who possessed the Ring for years enough to make him into a creature of treachery and pity. Gollum will stop at nothing to take the ring back for himself. The Fellowship is also hunted by the servants of the Enemy himself, terrifying creatures called Ringwraiths. The Wizard Saruman, who has forsaken wisdom in his own ambition, also tries to thwart Gandalf and the Fellowship and take the Ring for himself.
Their steps will take them from the charming village of Hobbiton, Frodo's home, to Rivendell, the home of the Elf Lord Elrond where the Fellowship was formed and finally to Mordor where the Ring must be destroyed. Danger will pursue them as they valiantly struggle to make their way to Mordor.
Fellowship of the Ring is the first part of the highly acclaimed book by J.R.R. Tolkien, Lord of the Rings. It details the journey of a simple Hobbit - Frodo Baggins - and the weight of the burden he must bear in taking a Ring of great evil back to the place it was forged, and throwing it back into the fires that created it. It is a journey of strength and courage, a journey of discovery and friendship that begins with but a single step.
