The Da Vinci Code
(Dan Brown)
Back ground: Christanity believes that Jesus was an ascetic who never treaded a family life and died single. But a small sect priory of sion is privy to the fact that he was a married man with bloodline relatives. The Holy Grail refers to Mary Magdalene who held his blood in her womb. The priory of sions had kept that fact a closely guarded secret and their existence is not even known to the modern world. The book: The Da Vinci code says, Jesus was just an ordinary man, who was not divine, did not die for sins and was not resurrected. The story is about the murder of a curator Jacques Sauniere, within Louvre museum and an unusual code was found near his dead body including a name, Robert Langdon, written in blood. A Harvard symbologist, was summoned at the dead hours of night by French police as his name was Robert Langdon. The young and flamboyant professor, the hero of the book was threatened with arrest as police is convinced with his involvement in the murder. The tension builds up. To prove innocence Langdon gets unexpected help. The beautiful granddaughter of the murdered curator happens to be a gifted cryptologist working with the French police. She teams up with Langdon and decides to find the actual murderer by solving the clues. The process of investigations runs into deep trouble. The omniscient hand of a powerful invisible opponent seemed to thwart each and every effort. Time was running short for Langdon and the suspense peaks. As the couple continue their worldwide chase for the evidence of murder, they relaise that a dreaded secret awaits unravelling. A delay on their part might result in the irreversible loss of valuable documents. Finally the pieces of puzzle come together. It became known that Jesus did not die a bachelor. And the claim of his messiah hood is also not uncontested. He didnot even die on the cross. Survived by some miraculous power after three days of suffering, he had been able to reach a woman, his wife, Mary Magdalene. The child the woman was carrying was also his blood and Mary Magdalene had seen him before his disciples could do so. The answer to the question - why the lineage of the great messiah was kept a secret was the clue to the murder. Investigations reveal the murdered man was a supreme chief of the present day priory of sions who were the protectors of the Jesus's family. The glorification of Jesus was closely associated with his dying on the cross as a chaste man. There was a possibility that his wife and bloodline descendants would have yielded power and respect if the facts were revealed. The male dominated church of the time which controlled the social powers were concerned that Mary Magdalene, being a female, may rise to dominance because of his connection with Jesus. As her association with Jesus was a public fact and cannot be suppressed they conspired to label her as a prostitute. To make it doubly sure they banned the female goddess worship in christanity. The protectors of the Jesus's family were progressive intellectuals who were outnumbered by the dominant church of the first five centuries. So the Knight of Templer, who were protecting the Holy Grail kept it within the community. Later on the relatives become a part of the French Royal family and the documents passed on to the group of intellectuals like Boticelli, Victor Hugo, Sir Isaac Newton, Great Leonardo Da Vinci among others. The great Vatican vaguely knew of its existence and was concerned that his exposition will challenge their authority as well as the image of Christianity. Da Vinci kept it secret during his time but left clues of its existence in many of his famous paintings including Mona Lisa and the last supper. He hoped that when at a later period when world will be more logical and less orthodox, the deciphering of the hidden clues would reveal one of te most important facts of humanity and exonerate a great woman who had been a victim of a mean conspiracy of powerful people. The suspense thriller doesnot only provide us the moments of tension and anxiety. There is an undercurrent of romanticism between Macho man intellectual and the Beautiful heroine Sophie Neveu who was found to be a descendant of the Jesus.
