The Robots of Dawn is a fascinating tale of a detective, Elijah Bailey, who is called from overcrowded earth to solve an unusual mystery on a "Spacer" planet - a planet originally settled by earthlings who now disdain earth culture and view earth residents as contaminated.
What makes this mystery so unusual is that the victim is not human - but one of the first humanform robots ever to be designed. The prime suspect, obviously, is the robot's creator. But why would he destroy his prize creation?
Our hero, Elijah, meets with resistance from almost everyone he encounters due to the stigma associated with Earth. Political intrigue adds to this wonderful tale as Fastolfe, the robot's creator, is an important political figure on the planet Aurora who opposes the use of humanform robots to colonize new planets. His view is that this task should fall to "real" humans, to keep the adventurous spirit alive. His enemies are all too eager to make him responsible for this crime, while working hard to steal his knowledge of how to build a humanform robot. They fight hard to remove Elijah from the planet before he can uncover any other option but Fastolfe.
Elijah's political situation on Earth is not any better - after his last "off-earth" crime solving adventure, a short film was made that made him a hero among the populace and hated among his co-workers. He has been told that his career is over if he fails at this task.
This novel is not short on romance either - as Elijah and a Spacer from another planet, Gladia, exchange heated moments. Human/robot romance, and sex, is also explored - after all, a Robot was designed to please humans!
The actual "killer" is a complete surprise - you will never guess it until the very end.
