Author: Richmal Crompton.

William Brown (and his army of friends Douglas, Henry and Ginger ? collectively known as the Outlaws) was to my childhood as Harry Potter is to many childhoods today ? fun, adventurous, unpredictable, a leader, exceptionally human, and gloriously, gloriously British.

As with Harry, adults and children alike will enjoy William ? for the adults, he is an escape from the world of stress and worry to a carefree child?s world, and for the child, he is a source of wonders untold. All will enjoy the austere British setting of yesteryear that comprises William?s world.

This is the second of many William books and the collection of stories in this book offer us insights into Christmas in William?s house - William and his four year old cousin Jimmy discovering from a book called ?Things a Boy Can Do?, given to William on Christmas day, precisely ?things a boy can?t do?, or most definitely won?t do again after he has been beaten by his father!

We also discover that William has an innate dislike of Rice Mould, and a rather strong liking of the little girl next door ? the two are combined with hilarious if somewhat pained results.

Throughout this book William does a variety of other, interesting things, including the following ? while graciously offering accommodation to his new friend he unwittingly catches a burglar, changes tradition with the introduction of a May King, and rather to my disappointment, decides to reform by never telling a lie again at the suggestion of his priest via a Christmas sermon. William takes this VERY literally ? and it would seem that there are some instances where honesty is NOT the best policy!

Richmal Crompton?s warm, innovative way of writing ensured the survival of eleven year old William from the 1920s, through a World War into the 1960s. The world is ripe for a William revival. Read it now, before the stampede.
