Hybrids Are High On Hype

Kyle Kennedy asked the question in the Sunday paper if anyone owned a hybrid he wanted them to email him and tell how they liked their hybrid car.
I emailed him that yes I had a Toyota Prius, 2005. I had just purchased it a couple of weeks prior and was very happy with it. I was getting 43 to 54 miles per gallon. Considering the cost of gasoline in our area has been steadily rising for the last few years. They have become much higher in the last few months. At that time we were paying about $2.20 per gallon. I have been driving a Toyota Corolla, 2001, and was not happy with the mileage I was getting. I was lucky if I was getting 18 miles to the gallon. The other reason I decided to trade my car in was the engine was going to need replaced in the next few weeks or months. The mechanic couldn't be sure but he suggested we not wait too much longer. Since I didn't like the idea of putting a few thousand into a new engine I turned my thoughts to a new car. This article showed me that I wasn't the only person making the decision to jump to a relatively untried concept car. The Prius has only been out a few years but I liked the idea of a car with 50 to 60 MPG. The article had a comparison of a number of hybrid cars. It showed the Ford Escape Hybrid, the Honda Accord Hybrid, the Honda Civic Hybrid, the Toyota Prius. They were compared for Cost in 5 years at their estimated MPG savings. I don't like the assumptions he made. I'm not sure he was comparing them in a logical way.
