Wizards, witches and magical wishes ? the first book in J.K Rowling's bestselling Harry Potter series drops the hooks onto which most avid readers will suspend their disbelief and willingly take their first steps into a magical realm of fantasy.

Harry Potter is a young orphaned lad leading a solitary, glum existence under the reluctant care of his mother's sister and her husband. Ignored by his foster parents and tormented by his spoiled cousin, he is only too delighted to discover on his thirteenth birthday, that he is not as unremarkable and dim-witted as his relatives would have him believe, but he actually possesses magical powers ? past on to him by his parents who died when he was a baby.

Harry is summoned (by an owl-delivered invitation) to England's illustrious (and only) school of magic, the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and there begins on a journey that disproves practically everything he has believed about the world and about his past. For starters, he finds out that his parents were a famous witch and wizard, who had actually died fighting the world's most powerful dark magician the Lord Voldemort. (Not in a car accident, as he'd been told) Voldemort, who came close to ruling the world, was defeated that fateful night by Harry himself, then just a baby.

Now re-entering a realm where everyone (except him) remembers his famous victory over Voldemort, Harry must not only survive the daily adolescent dramas symptomatic of school life, but also live up to the fame of his name. To make matters worse, it seems the Dark Lord was not defeated completely, and is out to annihilate Harry Potter, the boy who thwarted his plans the first time round. But while destiny sits heavily on the shoulders of our young hero, Harry's first year at Hogwarts is not a gloomy tale of struggle. Like any other school, Hogwarts is brimming with lively characters ? teachers as mystical as the arts they lecture in, a headmaster who is reputed to be the most powerful wizard who ever lived and friends also growing up in a far from normal setting.

This first book in the Harry Potter series paints scenes and brings to life characters who never fail to engage and enthrall readers on an imaginative whirlwind tale documenting the age-old battle between good and evil in a way that has never before been seen.
