Truth behind "The Da Vinci Code"

The novel is a wonderful work trying to reveal the secret behind the Mona Lisa Smile. It is a multi-layered, highly sophisticated tale attempting to find the truth behind Mary Magdalene, whom the author claims to be the wife of Jesus whereas the Church (Gregory in the 6thCentury) had pronounced as a Prostitute, whom Jesus had saved.

The book has some astonishing revelations and links the descendants of the Christ to The Priory of Sion, the secret society in Europe protecting the Holy Grail or the descendants of the Christ born of Mary Magdalene. It also states that Leonardo Da Vinci was one of the members of that secret society at one point of time. The society consisted of several forward thinkers, artists and well known personalities of that time who would be able to comprehend and digest the truth behind the Holy Grail (The Womb of Mary Magdalene). Da Vinci being one of them would not have the courage to reveal the secret to the world. The greatest genius of all time was wise enough to encrypt the Secret, and links to it, in many of his works including the most famous ?The Last Supper?.

It also establishes a link with the Tales of King Arthur and his knights, who are also assumed to be the Protectors of the Holy Grail and a part of the great Army protecting the secret and the descendents of the Christ who later became a part of the genetic tree of the French Royal Family.

Although the book is not the first one on the subject, it has become extremely popular in this age of the internet and mass media when information is at the fingertips of the readers. The preface to the book calls it a work of fiction but also states that the evidences mentioned are real.

So, is the book convincing enough? Yes very much. It has succeeded in creating a mass interest. Readers with advanced degrees in comparative religion, European history, symbology, art and cryptology, will have a grand time with Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. The rest of us stumble through, grasping at this clue and that, gasping in surprise at one or another shadow around the next corner, and likewise have a great time reading it. The novel is maddening, scary, complicated and almost impossible to put down once you're hooked.

But, truth is that there are weak links to the facts represented and faulty assumptions, which have no evidence in real life have been taken in to account for making the entire plot a success. Scholars are divided. Controversies have been brought up. Many are also tight lipped. Some argue that The Church wouldn?t have revealed the secret about a wife and progeny of Jesus in order to protect his image as a chaste man. Many say that Mary Magdalene would have become stronger than the church in that male dominated society of the first five centuries had not the Church called her the Prostitute whom Jesus saved. Mary Magdalene's escape to the southern Coast of France and the birth she gave to a Baby Girl are all assumptions with no concrete facts. One great contribution of the novel is the sanctification of Mary Magdalene, who indeed was one of the greatest Apostles of the Christ. She was no prostitute as the Church had proclaimed. The facts pointed out in this direction in the book are true and it is also amazing that the bible has no where mentioned her as a fallen woman.

Without taking any credit away from the great work of Dan Brown, it must be stated that the story has stated some famous hypotheses as postulates and has stirred the Hornet?s Nest. Nevertheless, it makes an interesting reading and well deserves to be the Bestseller it is.
