My Name Is Asher Lev
(Chaim Potok)

Publicidade
My Name is Asher Lev is a sensitive and exceptionally poignant story of a genius and the tragedy, hurt and triumph that surround him.

Asher Lev knows from a very young age that he is an exceptional artist. The book is illustrated by descriptions of Asher's own paintings - he transfers images from his life to his page effortlessly. The searing reality, however, is that his religion, Hasidic Judaism, teaches that art is the devil's work. Asher is continuously reminded of this by his father, who travels and does work for the Rebbe, and cannot reconcile himself to this "devilish" talent of his son's.

Asher is continuously torn between his loved ones and his all consuming talent. His life seems to be a road leading to a destination over which he has no control - there is a point that he needs to reach before he can take control. Asher comes to realize the self sacrificial role his mother has played in keeping the peace between father and son and realizes that he cannot have both worlds any more - he has to make it clear that he is dying to one and committing to the other. This he does in spectacular fashion.

Does his religion triumph over his art, or does his art overcome? Whatever Asher does is at great cost to both him and to those whom he loves.

This is a book to be read again and again - each time you read it you discover something that new. The book is informative in all respects including religion and art, and factually correct. Great attention has been given to the smallest details and issues have been dealt with with the highest integrity.

Chaim Potok previously wrote The Chosen and The Promise - together with these, My Name is Asher Lev will be remembered as a classic.
