Lily Goodhue, the daughter of wealthy Violet and Charles Goodhue, lives her early years rejected by her parents. Bitter because their only child is a girl, they eventually conceive again and give birth to Charles, who is later killed when he is thrown from a spooked horse. Lilly, blamed for his death, is sent away. Only as a reputable young woman do they bring her back, to arrange her marriage to Roger Humphrey, who is also pushed into marriage by his father. However, before the wedding, Lily is charmed and won over by Harry Kohle, a young college student and would-be writer. Roger is relieved by the breakup and moves to Paris with his boyfriend Christopher.
Both families reject the marriage and disown their children. Determined, the young couple takes an inheritance of Lily?s and buy a farm in the country. Harry sells his articles and barely scrapes by. He becomes withdrawn and bitter while Lily raises their poorly behaved children. Lily convinces him to move away and write his novel while she supports the family by sewing and canning. After a year, Harry finally finishes his novel and sends it to agents, only to be called back by one, Ellis Knox.
Over the years the marriage continues to fall apart. The family moves into a cold mansion, built solely by Harry to prove his success to his parents. The children go their own ways and the younger ones are sent away to school. Harry continues to write more best sellers. The suicide of a son only drives Harry farther from the family. Everyone, including Harry, blames his son?s death.
Harry is seduced by his assistant and starts traveling all over the world. Lily is encouraged by Ellis to start serving on committees and fundraising money for good causes. She eventually learns of Harry?s infidelity, but after a romantic weekend forgives him. Harry returns to fire his assistant, only to have another affair with someone else.
Ellis voices his love for Lily and just as he believes that they might have a chance, Lily discovers that her daughter, Melissa, is having a baby in Paris. Melissa refuses to acknowledge or keep the child and states that she is going to give it up for adoption. Lily, unable to bear the thought of losing a grandchild, buys fake documents and hires a woman to fly baby Cadeau back to America. After hiding Cadeau, Lily announces that she has given birth to Cadeau. Harry, overjoyed to have Lily back, hides his life-threatening illness until it is too late. He dies on a cruise with Lily and Cadeau.
In mourning, Lily returns back to her farm in the country. One day, after several months of solitude with Cadeau, she turns around to see Ellis standing behind her. Overjoyed, she leaps into his arms.
