The Libation-bearers
(Aeschylus)

Publicidade
The second part of the Oresteia is set in Argos many years after the death of Agamemnon. The play begins with Electra, the daughter of Clytaemnestra and Agamemnon, still lamenting the death of her father. Clytaemnestra and her lover, Aegisthus, have forced Electra's brother, Orestes, into exile while, in the mean time, the Princess Electra has become debased as a servant in the palace.

Orestes returns in disguise and finds his sister paying homage to her father's tomb. Orestes hides when he sees Electra and the chorus of women come up to the grave in order to hear news of what has occurred in his absence. Electra finds a lock of hair at the grave and believes that it is from the head of her brother who she long though dead. The return of Orestes brings new hope to his sister, who now believes that revenge against their father's death is finally upon them. Orestes comes out of hiding to show Electra that her wishes are true and the God Apollo himself has decreed that Orestes should kill Aegisthus and their mother, Clytaemnestra to revenge their father's ignomonious demise.

Orestes, his friend Pylades, and Electra plot to overthrow their enemies. While Electra keeps watch, he and Pylades will enter the palace in disguise. They decide to bring Clytaemnestra news of Orestes' death and thus find an opening to kill both Clytaemnestra and her lover. When Clytaemnestra hears news of her son's death, she sends for Aegisthus so that they can celebrate the loss of the man they most fear.

Clissa, the children's old nurse, is sent to find Aegisthus and tell him the news of Orestes' death. She mourns the loss of Orestes who was like a son to her. The chorus tell her to have faith and that Orestes may not actually be dead. They ask her to send for Aegisthus alone and try and have him come without his body guards. Clissa convinces Aegisthus and he returns unaccompanied to the palace. Shortly afterwards, news of his swift death reach Clytaemnestra. She begs her son for her life, but Pylades convinces Orestes to show no mercy. Clytaemnestra warns him that his act of matricide will bring down a terrible curse on him. However, Orestes and Pylades drag the queen into the palace and kill her anyway.

Orestes exits the palace with the bodies of his enemies. He declares that justice is restored. However, the revenging Furies enter, horrible Goddesses of revenge with snakes in their hair; they are only seen by Orestes. Orestes runs away in terrible pursuit by the revenging Furies. The Chorus are left wondering if the curse of the House of Atreus will ever be removed.
