Year Of Migical Thinking
(Willingham O. Oba)

Publicidade
Down tragedy and insanity and she emerges to face it down again.  The most important two events -her husband''s death and her daughter''s illness (coma stage)- are the subject of Joan Didion''s memoir ''The Year of Magical Thinking''.  When it turned out, even the author herself was not ready for that.  Though the prose of her works is usually buffed to a high polish, the words of this work is made smooth deliberately .  Beginning is in the simplest and most documentary style.  Actually the first words of the work are just rough notes in the wake of the death of her husband (John Gregory Dunne, also a writer).  During the later days and weeks of Dunne''s death, Didion had a different experience which she had never known before:  true grief.   it was not like other forms of sadness.  Moreover, it came to her with a particular type of madness or real insanity.  She even began to feel that she could bring her husband back if she tried in the right way.  The time seems to be skipped backwards in the book skips by means of memories, echoes and chance connections.  The marriage of the author with Dunne is described as the union of two similar minds and workaholic talented writers.  They were the first readers as well as editors of each other.  Her grief and loss are really beyond the words.  Clarity of Didion''s writing is well known.  In Magical Thinking she describes how she lost this clarity since her mind was full of grief.  As the writing progresses we could observe how she regains the clarity once again.  She believes that writing is the only way she ever gained clarity.
