This book narrates the destiny of Karl Rossmann, who had been sent to America after the misunderstanding with his parents. He met his uncle Jakob in the port of New York, as soon as he landed there. Rossmann's uncle was a very rich man. He stayed with him for a couple of months. During this period, he learnt to speak very good English. Once a friend of his uncle Jakob visited his house. This man suggested him to visit his house. Karl was very happy about this. His relatives also agreed to this, but not so convincingly. At the time of his arrival at his uncle's friend, he received a letter from his uncle, in which he has written that Jakob wanted to break all the contacts with Karl. From this point of time, he required to manage his expenses on his own. Thus, he departed from New York. He was also forced to stay in a cheaper hotel. Young man has, by now, known two other persons. They were - Delmarche - a French, and Robinson - an Irish. Rossmann decided to search a job together with these two men. However he again went into dispute with the acquainted fellows. They were again separated from him. Afterwards he was able to find a job in the hotel "Occidental". This young mad worked there as a Liftboy. Unfortunately he was unfairly punished for theft by the hotel authorities and was forced to leave his job. Afterwards he stayed again with Robinson, Delamarche and Brunelda, a whimsical singer . In this house, he was treated just like a servant. Once he saw an advertisement on the streets. A theatre from Oklahoma was looking for workers. Karl applied to this theatre for the post of a technician and finally he got the job there. This Novel ends with the story, how Rossmann went to Oklahoma.
