In August of 1839, when Lieutenant Thomas R. Gedney laid eyes on this mysterious ship come to a New York shore, he had no idea what he was about to take part in. The ship was a lost slave ship commandeered by its captives and just so happened to hit land in a place where slavery was not in practice. The boat departed from Havana after purchasing the49 or soblacks and 4 children under 12on the open slave marketdestined for a delivery in Cuba. The slaves revolted killing the captain and most of his men, but 2. Those 2 men were found below the ship when it came ashore. The ship was taken to New London, CT.

This book is about the trial, which took place in Connecticut during the brink of abolishing slavery in the United States. It became an ugly court battle that defined the times and set a new precedent based on natural laws and the ideas that all personsshould be treated equally. Abolitionists developed the universal argument that all people should be treated equally regardless of colorand felt that they could win their argumentif they could demonstrate that theblack humanhad emotions. Persons who believed in slavery judged so because it was felt that black people in Africa were inferior because of the absence of civilized life; tribes kidnapped and sold their own members to white slave ships more often than not. They were seen as savage cannibals. The abolitionists had to construct political power in order to gain support for the movement in a pro-slavery era. They did thatfor the first time in the United States and won, theverdict was written in 1841, freeing the slaves of the Amistad.
