The vampire pursuit of the Vampaneze now begins in earnest. The trail quickly leads the heroes to a town familiar from book two, where Darren, now an adult who still looks like a child due to vampires aging slowly, has to go to school. Once again Darren is united with Debbie, the girl he fell in love with then. Her memory of their adventure and her endangerment in that story has been erased from her memory. Slowly however, Darren enlightens her as to what happened, as she again becomes embroiled in the danger that surrounds Darren. Initially she is bitter and afraid due to how he ended up using her during that adventure, but she grows to respect him again. The biggest surprise however is the identity of the two assistants to the Vampaneze chosen one, for one it is another of Darren Shan?s former acquaintances, Steve. It will be recalled that Steve had appeared in the first book, wanting desperately to be a vampire, Burt being turned down for being too evil. Steve poses now as a forgiving friend to gain Darren?s trust, but he is lying. He has joined the Vampaneze as a half-made vampire just as Darren has joined the vampires as a half-vampire. and seeks his revenge on Daren and his allies. Steve takes Debby as a hostage, handing her to the control of his master, the evil RV, who was maimed bythe circuswereolf in book two. Hw is Reggie Veggie, andnow has hooks for hands.The Vampanesze leader is also present, but unidentified. He orders the heroes to start running because his army will soon be in pursuit of them. Darren and friends have no choice but to flee, taking Steve as a hostage. They are surrounded by enemies. Debbie is a hostage to the vampaneze. Once the running vampires get intot he tunnels properly, they will be a mucheasier target fortheir enemies. Here the book ends, giving as usual a sample chapter from the next book in the series. . What seemed like minor points in earlier works in the series now take centre stage. A truly original vampire tale.
