The Red Tent

For those of us who find it hard to imagine how life was during biblical times ? this is the book! You have no idea how exciting it is to be inside a colorful tent, open on all sides in the hot desert where pleasant winds blow, greeting those traveling by just as our matriarch Rebecca had done, or to prepare drinks and knead honey dough with Leah. About two weeks ago I started reading a book I happened to have bought at the Hebrew Book Fair, usually historical books on the land of Israel don't intrigue me, but surprisingly, the book pulled me in more and more. The author tells the story of Dinah (Jacob's only daughter), in a simple and beautiful manner, which occurred some three thousand five hundred years ago. The lively descriptions of the author slowly "sucked" me into a totally unknown world, into a world where no electricity exists, where there are no faucets, and suddenly I felt as if I could see through her eyes, her daily life in the Tents of Jacob, especially in the Red Tent where our matriarchs during their menstrual period, held fascinating rituals like the "Opening of the Womb" where the women perceived their menstrual bleeding for the first time. The author not only amazes with the persuasion theory, but also with the sophisticated metaphors she chooses, leaving the reader with an unexpected and unique experience, a full and rich sensation. The relationships in the book are charged and realistic. Although there are many manipulations of historical facts which in some cases can be quite annoying, the overall enjoyment the reader creates through living that mysterious period in time and feeling part of those same historical events that shaped the everyday life of the children of Israel, is plenty efficient to go now and buy the book.
