(Dr. Nawal El Saadawi)

Woman at point zero:

as written by Dr. Nawal El Saadawi, a psychiatrist after she had conducted a research study of women and their neuroses. The study took place at the famous Qanatir women's prison. The story revolves around Firdus, a woman condemned to death by hanging for killing a pimp. The tale follows Firdus from her childhood with her parents, the act of incest committed against her by her uncle, how she became a prostitute and finally her rational for killing. Dr Nawal herself was imprisoned in the same prison for treason several years later by the Sadat regime. As a young girl growing up she lived with her parents and witnessed the inequality of treatment meted out to her female relatives by men, and this was a source of great concern to her. Her innocence was lost the day that her uncle molested her. But the injustice of being sent away by her uncle's wife and her subsequent forced marriage to an abusive husband cumulated into a hatred of men in general. This was made worse by her having herfemale genitalia forcibly removed in an old age act of female circumcision, but another loss that she suffer was the loss of sexual arousal that she had had the misfortune of experiencing as a young girl tending her cattle. She and a neighbour's son had experimented by touching and feeling each other. This feeling eluded her in all the relationships that she undertook and was a determining factor in her feeling towards men. The story unfolds with her journey through life and the consequents of being treated badly by men. In the end she choose to welcome death rather than let another man break her spirit.
