Papillon
(Henri Charrière)
An homage to the will to survive. In October 1932, the 15- year-old Henri Charriere is accused of the murder of a procurer. Papillon, which is his nickname, is sentenced to lifelong arrest and is sent to Cayenne, French Guayana. After a short period of time he tries to escape for the first time. His attempt fails, one of ten overall attempts to escape. Finally, after thirteen agonizing years, he manages to escape. Papillon (butterlfly) swears that he's not guilty, yet, that makes no difference. Beyond moral and humanity, he is a victim of his tormentor's disposal. Those tormentors try absolutely everything to break his will to survive. The unmercifulness, the cruelty, the "established" torture methods meke the human Papillon meet the edge of sanity. But unlike the other inmates, Papillon preserves the will to survive. After every failed attempt to flee, he is charged with several years of solitary confinement. In complete darkness, on a few squaremeters, surrounded by concrete, Papillon only fights against the inner wish to surrender, finally give up and die. "Papillon" by Henri Charriere is an auto-biography which shows the reader the very truth of the penal system of his time.
