The Iron Dream
(SPINRAD, NORMAN)

Publicidade
ABSTRACT ? NORMAN SPINRAD ? THE IRON DREAM 1972 ?|Panther books. One of the most controversial science fiction novels of all time, and deliberately provocative material. Spinrad liked to shock his readers and The Iron Dream cannot fail to shock. It is written as Adolph Hitler?s 1954 Hugo and Nebula Award Winning science fiction masterpiece, The Lord Of The Swastika. Spinrad declares in the forward that Hitler abandoned politics after the Munich Beer Hall Putsch led him to a period of imprisonment. Instead of writing Mein Kampf and taking control of the Third Reich, Hitler went into science fiction, and eventually wrote The Iron Dream. The book by Spinrad, a parody of sword and sorcery fantasy fiction in general, is from that that point on therefore to be taken as the book that Hitler wrote. It is in effect a science fiction alternative history of the events Hitler was to play such a role in. Hitler creates a character that is disgusted by the weak, corrupt and politically manipulative figures that dominate his world, which are clearly Jews in all but name. The hero o The Iron Dream does what Hitler did, and denounces the impure blooded creatures, and raises a political and military force with which to save his peoples, and while Hitler fortunately failed in this, the book?s heroes achieve their struggle. The final paragraphs show the Nazi rockets (parodying V2 missiles) loaded with the sperm of the Aryan master race so that they can fertilise and purify the entire Universe. The story is told straight faced, with no sense that what Hitler is championing is wrong, but Spinrad knows full well that the work is not going to appeal to Neo Nazis, as much as to the champions of freedom and liberty. It is an astonishing premise for a book, though overlong in its execution, as even a few chapters in will give most readers the whole sense of where the work is going. It is only that spectacularly absurd ending that shows how empty and meaningless and nihilistic The Iron Dream, and the dreams of the 1.000-year Reich really were proved to be. A brave and astonishing, unforgettable read.
