The Clan Of The Cave Bear
(Jean M. Auel)

Publicidade
This book explores the notion of cultural advancement in the primitive age from a feminine perspective. The story has been well-developed and the author took great pains to get the details right, even going as far as learning how to build an ice cave in a survival class. The central conflict between the protagonist and the clan she struggles to be apart of and yet is different from is intriguing and a deep reflection of human nature.

People have always been afraid of 'The Other' who is different from then. In this sense, this is a classic story that brings insight into this struggle. There is a lot of emphasis on the environment and the emotional state of the character. The book is very educational and useful to any anthropology student. Anyone interested in archaeology, ancient cultures and primitive man may enjoy this book. I do not agree, though, that it is a 'feminist statement.' Since the author was a woman, she simply chose to write from a woman's perspective. Had the character been passive, one-dimensional and a follower, she would not have been complex, dynamic, intelligent, and interesting.
