A Cartomante (the Fortune Teller)
(Machado de Assis)
The Fortune teller (published in the book Várias Histórias) narrates Camilo, Vilela and Rita's history. The first two were best friends; Rita was wife of the second and lover of the first. When Camilo begins to receive anonymous accusations, it reduces the frequency of the visits to the friend. Concerned, Rita visits a fortune teller, fact that makes Camilo to laugh. When Vilela calls Camilo to his house he goes worried, and passes before in the fortune teller thinking that he doesn't have anything to lose. She assures him that nothing will go wrong and he arrives unworried Vilela's house, where he finds Rita dead. Vilela then kills him.
