Enders Game
(Orson Scott Card)
Enders Game is the story of a six-year-old boy. It takes place in the future; earth has been through two interstellar wars with a race commonly referred to as the buggers. Fearing a third conflict the Governments of the various nations have began sending children to be trained in the tactics involved in space combat.Ender (Andrew Wiggin) ?the six-year-old boy?is a third. America is currently suffering from problems with over population and thusly all families are restricted to two children. The government after seeing promise in the Wiggin families first to children?Peter and Valentine?was given permission to have a third child. This is where the name Ender comes from he is the last of their children. Ender is often teased at school for being different-- he is also forced to where a monitoring device. At the remarkable age of six though the military decides it is time to send him into space to train. Most of the training revolves around two games, there is a psychological game which the students may play on their computers?this game is often used as a metaphor for what Ender is going through and is important in the later novels for other reasons?and a game in which the students participate in their teams and have combat in a zero-g environment. This book is one of the science fiction classics. It is interesting as a stand alone but also the introduction to one of my favorite series?followed by speaker for the dead, xenocide and children of the mind. While the flavor of the rest of the series I found to be slightly different (and I actually enjoyed the other novels more) Enders game is a must read for any sci-fi fan. The series also spawned a ?Shadow? series following one of Enders friend?s Bean and Ender?s brother Peter. There is also currently a movie in production
