An American lady, Mrs Curtain comes to The No.1 Ladies? Detective Agency to ask if Mma Ramotswe could provide closure to the unsolved disappearance of her son, Michael, ten years previously. Mama Ramotswe, having lost a child of her own, is sympathetic, and takes on the case, not sure if anything will come of it. But she begins to investigate anyway.
Mr Matekoni buys Mma Ramotswe a small diamond ring, to the annoyance of the owner of Judgement-Day Jewellers, who had been hoping to make a lot more money from the successful businessman.
Mma Ramotswe?s investigation of Michael?s disappearance leads her to a farmhouse just beyond Molelopole, where Michael lived during his last days. The farmhouse is deserted, delapitated and occupied by ants and wildlife, who do not take well to the human intrusion. There is no sighn of life or what once was, but an old newspaper clipping and a strong intuition that Michael is buried there.

Mr J. L. B Matekoni?s maid is angry that Mma Ramotswe is moving in on her employer because then she will not be able to entertain men at the house, on his bed if she works at the hotel, so she decides to do something about Mma Ramotswe, she decides to plant a gun in her house and tip off the police so that she will get arrested.
She calls in a favour from one of her lovers, who obtains a gun for her, and then from another one of her lovers, who owes her money, she asks him to take the gun and plant it in Mma Ramotswe?s house, but he manages to tip off the police that she has a gun, instead, and she is arrested.
At this point, Mma Ramotswe had met the children, having bumped into the three of them out shopping one afternoon, they stay at her house and she begins to play mother to them, they like her.
It also transpires that the girl, instead of the boy is interested in machanics, to the disappointment of Mr J. L. B Matekoni, who had been hoping to apprentice his son to take of Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors when he is older.
Mma Ramotswe?s secretary, Mma Makutsi wants to become a detective, also, and Mma Ramotswe agrees to promote her, and her first case happens to walk in the next morning. It is a man who suspects his wife of cheating on him, so Mma Makutsi investigates.
She follows the wife from her home to the home of her lover, then she questions the maids of the house to find out who the woman is and what her business is with the man. It transpires that the man has a rich wife who bought him the house, and the woman?s little boy is actually his son.
