Coaching Cross Country Successfully
(Joe Newton; Joe Henderson)

Publicidade
Coaching Cross Country Successfully, Joe NewtonCross Country Coach Joe Newton of York High School in Illinois takes you through more than three decades of recruiting, planning, training, racing, winning and losing. Joe Newton is clearly doing more than just training runners, he is cultivating relationships and challenging individuals to work extremely hard to improve their athletic performance. His success in fielding a winningteam is matched by his success in promoting the sport. He gets kids to joinand give it a try. He gets a community to come out and cheer. The book includes training pace charts, technical advice on mileage andfrequency of training, meet checklists and evaluation strategies. If you arelooking for a complete package to help you coach a high school cross countryteam you found it. I personally coach a Community College Cross Country teamand I found the book very helpful. If winning races was the only reward to middle distance running I expect most runners would abandon the whole project as senseless suffering and pointless agony. The
story that unfolds in this book is one of personal development and the
creation of a well rounded human being. The mental, social and physical
development all occur together when a person perseveres through physical hardship with a group of like minded individuals. The story is highlighted by testimonials, anecdotal tales and remembrances written byformer
runners from York High School. These add colour and depth to the
authors overview of the program. Each of Joe's runners where changed in
one way or another by their experience on his Cross Country team. Some
more than others. Some became confident leaders, others learned the
deep far reaching value of pace, rhythm, cadence, planning and full
effort. They all grew with a sense of achievement. One of the greatest things a coach can do for a young athlete is instill a sense ofself esteem in the young person. Parents and teachers often fail to fulfill thisbasic
task. It is sometimes coaches like Joe Newton who work the real
miracles and transform a young person's life. I am sure all runners who
gave it all they had for four years on the York Cross Country team left
believing they could take on any challenge and succeed.
