(Gavalda, Anna)

Translation by: femme/300/5 November 2005
This rather short narrative immortalizes the few days that a woman spends with her children and father-in-law following the breakup of her marriage.
She is thunderstruck when she learns that her husband is leaving her to get back together again with another woman. She had not, however, suspected or imagined that anything of the kind might happen.
Her life is put on trial. She then spends several days with her husband's father in his country home, along with her two daughters. This is her chance to make her point about their married life to both her father-in-law and herself, but above all, it is a time for confidences. Pierre defends his son, stipulaitng that he had actually proved his honesty by leaving her and Chloe does not comprehend this. It's then that Pierre, a man who is normally cold and doesn't allow his feelings to show through, launches into the story of an extramarital adventure he had with a woman that lasted a few years. And in spite of all the love that he had for her, he was never able to leave his home, wife, and son.
His words are mixed with bitterness and regrets. Chloe had never seen him like that. And this passage in his life explains why he tended to not disapprove of his son's actions towards Chloe.
Therefore, they spend long moments arguing and questioning each other's feelings and the affective choices they could make.
This breakup is, in fact, a way of bringing Chloe and her father-in-law together. Everything is said, everything that they have on their hearts is thrown out towards the other. Their dialogues revolve around one subject only-lost love.
